Unmasking Barbeloth: Mona’s Enigmatic Teacher and Hexenzirkel Mage in Genshin Impact

The world of Teyvat in Genshin Impact is brimming with fascinating characters, many of whom are shrouded in mystery and hinted at through lore long before their actual appearance. Among these powerful figures are the mages of the Hexenzirkel, a clandestine group boasting some of the most formidable magic users in the game. One such individual, often spoken of but rarely seen, is Barbeloth. Finally, in Genshin Impact Version 5.6, we caught a glimpse of this intriguing character, albeit in an unexpected form. So, who exactly is Barbeloth? Let’s delve into everything we currently know.

Barbeloth: A Name Whispered Through the Stars

Barbeloth holds a significant position within the Hexenzirkel, known for her mastery of both Hydromancy (the magic of water) and Astrology (the study of celestial bodies).1 While her direct involvement in the game’s narrative has been limited, her influence is undeniable.

Most notably, Barbeloth is the esteemed teacher of Mona Megistus, the quirky and incredibly skilled astrologist we’ve come to know.2 It was Barbeloth who tasked Mona with a rather peculiar mission: journey to Mondstadt to retrieve her diary from Klee, a diary apparently filled with secrets from Barbeloth’s younger years. This task alone hints at a close, albeit perhaps complicated, relationship between the two mages and a connection to Alice, Klee’s mother and another prominent member of the Hexenzirkel.

A Surprise Appearance in Version 5.6’s “Paralogism”

After numerous mentions and much speculation, Barbeloth finally made her debut in the Archon Quest “Paralogism” in Version 5.6.3 However, in a whimsical twist, she didn’t appear in her true form. Instead, alongside her friend Alice, Barbeloth manifested as a giant Dodoco.4 This unexpected transformation served a crucial role in the quest, as they put Albedo and the Traveler through a trial before granting them the necessary materials to transform Mini Durin into a human. This playful yet significant appearance further cemented Barbeloth’s connection to Alice and her willingness to engage with the Traveler in unique ways.

Will Barbeloth Grace Us as a Playable Character?

This is the burning question on many Travelers’ minds! As of now, there has been no official information or credible leaks suggesting that Barbeloth will become a playable character in Genshin Impact. However, given her established lore and her recent, albeit transformed, appearance, the possibility certainly lingers.

Characters with such rich backstories and clear connections to existing playable figures often find their way into our active rosters eventually. Barbeloth and Alice are undoubtedly well-developed enough to warrant future inclusion. Their prominent roles in Version 5.6 could very well be foreshadowing a more significant appearance down the line.

The most likely region for the Hexenzirkel mages to make a more substantial appearance is Nod-Krai, the region slated to arrive after Natlan. Known as a melting pot of various factions from across Teyvat, Nod-Krai could provide the perfect stage for these powerful mages to step into the spotlight.

If Barbeloth were to become playable, her affinity for Hydromancy strongly suggests she would be a Hydro element character, aligning with her magical specialization.

The Enigma Continues…

For now, Barbeloth remains an intriguing figure in the Genshin Impact lore, a powerful mage whose influence is felt even when she’s not directly present. Her surprise appearance as a giant Dodoco in Version 5.6 only adds to her mystique. As we continue our journey through Teyvat, the possibility of encountering Barbeloth in her true form and perhaps even adding her to our team remains an exciting prospect.
